Index

지금까지는 줄곧 ‘단락’이라는 용어를 사용해 왔습니다. 그러다가 ‘단락’과 ‘문단’은 서로 같은 뜻인지 아니면 어떤 계층을 구분하는 것인지 궁금해졌습니다. 사실 아직도 명확한 답을 찾지 못했지만 지금까지 파악한 내용을 공유하면 다음과 같습니다.

## 문장 단락을 줄인 말인 문단

일단 단락과 문단은 같은 말일 수 있습니다. 다만 단락이 ‘일단락을 짓다’처럼 어떤 일이나 상황에 두루 쓰이는 반면, ‘문장 단락’을 줄인 말인 문단은 문장에서만 사용된다고 합니다.

## ‘형식 문단’과 ‘내용 문단’

그리고 중요한 것은, 문단이 ‘형식 문단’과 ‘내용 문단’으로 나뉜다는 것입니다. 우리가 문단과 단락이 계층 관계가 아닐까 생각하며 가졌던 의문에 대한 답이 여기에 있었습니다.

‘형식 문단’이란 전체 글에서 한 자를 들여 쓴 글의 마디입니다. 지금까지 ‘단락’이라 부르면서, 눈에 보이는 명확한 구분이 필요하다고 말했던 바로 그것이 형식 문단입니다.

‘내용 문단’은 하나 또는 둘 이상의 형식 문단이 하나의 소주제를 가지고 긴밀하게 연결되어 있는 마디를 말합니다. 부제목으로 구분하는 영역이 바로 내용 문단인 것입니다.

앞으로는 보다 명확한 표현을 위하여 단락이 아닌 문단이라는 용어를 사용하겠습니다. 그리고 ‘내용 문단 > 형식 문단’ 정도의 개념 정도만 이해하고 있으면 될 것 같습니다.
